The Franklin Police Department will host a free 90-minute seminar on Monday, Nov. 9, teaching residents how to respond during an active shooter situation.

The Citizens' Response to Active Shooter Seminar begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Franklin Police Headquarters, 900 Columbia Ave., according to a city news release. Registration is required.

The department said the seminar comes as the holiday season approaches, with larger crowds expected at shopping centers, places of worship, community events and other public spaces. Police are encouraging residents to take time to learn how they can better prepare themselves for an emergency.

The 90-minute session will cover three areas: recognizing warning signs of potential violence, developing a survival mindset before an emergency occurs and making critical decisions during an active threat to help protect themselves and others. The department said the seminar aims to give participants practical strategies to respond quickly and effectively.

"Preparation is about giving yourself options when every second matters," Franklin Police Chief Deb Faulkner said in the release.

Faulkner said the seminar is an opportunity for residents to learn simple, practical steps that can help them respond with confidence during an emergency. She added that the department hopes attendees never have to use the information but wants the community to be prepared.

Weapons are strictly prohibited inside Franklin Police Headquarters.

To register, email Donna Thorpe at [email protected] and include the number of attendees.
