Democrat Victoria Broderick defeated U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais by 280 votes in Tennessee's 4th Congressional District on Tuesday, Nov. 3, flipping the seat that covers Franklin and Williamson County.
The result, first reported by the Nashville Post, marks the first time a Democrat has won the district since DesJarlais took office in 2011. Unofficial returns showed Broderick with 95,585 votes to DesJarlais' 95,305, according to the Nashville Banner.
The Associated Press had not called the race as of early Wednesday, and DesJarlais had not conceded, WPLN reported. The contest remained subject to certification because of its narrow margin, according to IBTimes. No public response from DesJarlais appeared in any available reporting.
Broderick, 34, is a tech support worker from Fayetteville who serves on the Tennessee Democratic Party executive committee, according to Tennessee Lookout. She described herself as "a working-class mom from rural Tennessee," the Lookout reported.
The win was a dramatic reversal. In 2024, DesJarlais beat Broderick by more than 40 percentage points, capturing nearly 70% of the vote, according to WPLN.
What changed? A mid-decade redistricting by Tennessee Republicans shuffled the state's congressional map. Lawmakers divided the Democratic-held Memphis district represented by Steve Cohen, aiming to give Republicans all nine of Tennessee's U.S. House seats, IBTimes reported. The new 4th District map added the southeastern corner of Davidson County, which includes part of Nashville, the Nashville Banner reported.
Republicans did flip the Memphis-area seat. But Broderick offset that gain in the 4th District. She won only two of the district's 11 counties, Davidson and Rutherford, according to Tennessee Lookout. Those are the two most populous counties in the district.
Broderick was also vastly outspent. She reported raising less than $100,000 as of Oct. 14, compared with more than $600,000 raised by DesJarlais, the Nashville Banner reported.
In a statement after her victory, Broderick said, "District 4 rose to the occasion, at a time when rising costs, the war in Iran, and political chaos affects the lives of everyday Americans," according to WKRN.
Broderick campaigned on affordability, protecting rural hospitals, responsible gun laws and voluntary pre-K, according to WPLN. She said she first became involved in politics because of her own pregnancy complications, WPLN reported.
DesJarlais, a physician from Sherwood, had been a supporter of President Donald Trump in Congress. Democratic candidates across the country sought to link Republican opponents to the war in Iran and high gas prices, the Nashville Banner reported.
With the win, Broderick became the only Democrat in Tennessee's nine-member congressional delegation, the Nashville Banner reported. Nationally, Democrats won control of the U.S. House, with the AP calling the chamber for Democrats early Wednesday, according to Duane Morris Government Strategies.
The race's 280-vote margin means certification and a potential recount could follow before the result is final.
