Fairview climbed to No. 5 in the Class 3A football poll after its third straight shutout, while top-ranked BGA lost quarterback Bo Bryan to a broken collarbone.
The Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) released its weekly rankings Monday, Oct. 19. Fairview earned 108 points after beating Camden Central 44-0 on Friday, Oct. 16, moving up from No. 6, according to the Williamson Herald. Battle Ground Academy held its unanimous No. 1 ranking in Division II-AA with all 19 first-place votes after a 35-0 win over Pope John Paul II the same night.
The Wildcats paid a steep price for that victory.
Bryan, a senior, was sacked and landed hard on his right shoulder during BGA's second drive, The Tennessean reported. He left the field in a sling and did not return. He underwent surgery on Monday, Oct. 19, according to Instagram posts from his parents, Caroline and Luke Bryan.
Bryan told The Tennessean he does not know when he will return, but his doctors believe he could be back by the playoffs. The first round of the TSSAA football playoffs is Nov. 6.
Through seven games this season, Bryan threw for 2,006 yards and 30 touchdowns with three interceptions. Wide receiver Maximus Curry took most snaps at quarterback after Bryan's exit, completing 3-of-7 passes for 53 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
BGA (7-1, 4-0 in the Division II-AA Middle Region) plays Goodpasture Christian on Oct. 23 and visits Franklin Grace on Oct. 30 to close the regular season.
Fairview's defense keeps rolling
The Yellow Jackets' win over Camden Central was their third consecutive shutout and fourth in five games. Fairview's defense forced five turnovers, including a 32-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by senior Wyatt Langford in the third quarter, the Williamson Herald reported.
"We come out with a different kind of physicality than the teams we play," said senior John Barrick, who scored two touchdowns on three carries.
Fairview piled up 301 yards of offense to Camden's 98. Junior quarterback Isaac Burgos went 6-for-11 for 85 yards and a 25-yard touchdown pass to Lincoln Kelley. Julius Carter added 62 yards and a score on just three carries. The balanced attack featured 11 ball carriers.
Fairview (8-0, 4-0 in Region 6-3A) closes the regular season with road games at Cheatham County and Waverly Central.
