Franklin High's volleyball team dethroned defending state champion Summit in five sets Saturday, Oct. 10, to win the District 10-AAA championship.
The Admirals rallied for a 25-17, 15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14 victory at Summit High School in Spring Hill, according to the Williamson Herald. It is the program's first district title since 2015.
The 26-1 Admirals swept all three meetings with Summit this season. Each went to a fifth set.
The clinching sequence came down to two plays. Grace Caroline Steih placed the go-ahead kill from the left side to break a 14-14 tie in the fifth set. Then junior Jorden Robinson stuffed a Summit attack out of a timeout on a call from coach MaKayla Beebe.
"Coach Beebe looked at me and was like, 'Look, you are going to block right side,' … I was like, 'I got this,'" Robinson said.
Fogle, Garner and Myhr power balanced attack
Junior Ellyson Fogle led Franklin with 19 kills and 11 digs. Three-year starter Emmy Garner, the regular-season district MVP, dished out 46 assists with 10 digs, seven kills and three blocks. Garner added seven assists and two kills in the decisive fifth set.
Defensive specialist Maggie Myhr was named tournament MVP after recording 42 digs in the final. Myhr eclipsed 1,000 career digs in the district semifinal win over Page on Thursday, Oct. 8. After that semifinal, Myhr told the Williamson Herald: "It's never enough. This feels good, but there always another step that we're trying to achieve."
Six Admirals recorded at least six kills: Fogle (19), Steih (14), Brynn Pennington (8), Garner (7), Robinson (6) and Clara Leister (6). As a team, Franklin posted 60 kills, 81 digs, 10 blocks and eight aces.
Summit's firepower falls short
Summit did not go quietly. Emery Estep led all players with a match-high 23 kills. Everleigh DeShazo and Madison Spelta each added 20. Spelta posted a .548 hitting percentage on 31 attacks, and setter Raegan Burtch recorded 58 assists.
The Spartans won the Class AAA state title for the first time in program history last season.
Region 5-AAA up next
Franklin hosts the Region 5-AAA tournament Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Admirals face District 9-AAA runner-up Coffee County, while Summit takes on District 9-AAA champion Lincoln County. The two winners meet later Tuesday for the region title and hosting rights for Thursday's sectional round.
