Independence dropped to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in Region 6-6A with a 28-10 loss at Brentwood on Friday, Oct. 23, setting up a pivotal regular-season finale against Summit.

The Eagles will host the Spartans to close the regular season in Week 11. The Tennessee high school football regular season concludes Oct. 30, according to The Tennessean, with the first round of TSSAA playoffs set for Nov. 6. The top four teams in each region qualify for the postseason.

"This was a hard fought game," Independence coach Scott Blade said, according to the Williamson Herald. "Hats off to Brentwood for the win. We will go back and look at the film to see what we can do to improve and get ready for Summit."

Independence actually struck first. Senior quarterback Matthew Horner connected with Brody Bullock on a 3-yard scoring play that capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 6:50 left in the first quarter. The Williamson Herald's game account described Horner throwing to Bullock, while the scoring summary listed the touchdown as a pass from Bullock to Horner.

Brentwood answered quickly and never trailed again. A blocked punt by Tyler Chastain set up a short field, and the Bruins took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. Jones Merrill intercepted a Horner pass and returned it to the 1-yard line late in the first half, leading to another Brentwood score and a 21-7 halftime advantage.

Junior kicker Kipton Robinson drilled a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter to pull Independence within 21-10. But Brentwood's defense held the Eagles to just 50 yards on the ground for the game. Jay Sharp picked off another Horner pass early in the fourth quarter, setting up a 49-yard Merrill touchdown reception that sealed the final score.

Horner finished 27-for-45 for 223 yards. His top three targets accounted for all but one of his completions: Bullock hauled in 12 catches for 92 yards, Ethan Langerbeins grabbed six for 70 yards and Brock Daniel added eight for 61 yards.

Blade returned to lead the Independence program in late 2024 after coaching the Eagles for nine seasons and winning a state championship in 2015, according to the Williamson Scene. He is Independence's winningest coach with a 74-37 record at the school.

Summit enters the Week 11 matchup at 3-6 overall and 2-3 in region play after falling to Franklin 24-21 in Spring Hill on Friday, Oct. 23, according to The Tennessean's Week 10 scoreboard.

Independence hosts the Spartans on Friday, Oct. 30, in the regular-season finale for both teams.
